What health insurance covers
Basic health insurance covers psychological psychotherapy. A doctor referral is required. The deductible and co-payment apply as with other medical treatments. Here’s how it works:
Medical prescription
A doctor issues the prescription, for example your GP, paediatrician or psychiatrist. This means the first sessions are covered by basic health insurance without any further formalities.
After 15 sessions
Your psychotherapist and the prescribing doctor review your progress. If continuing therapy is appropriate, a second prescription is issued for another 15 sessions.
After 30 sessions
To continue therapy, a case assessment by a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy is required, as well as approval of the costs by your health insurance provider.
As a self-paying client
Psychotherapy is also available without a medical prescription. In this case, you cover all costs yourself.
- No doctor's appointment required
- No notification to your health insurance provider
- Full flexibility regarding the number and frequency of sessions
